After School Programs

Statistics

In Illinois, 26% of children have no adult supervision after school, and care for themselves during the afternoon hours. African-American and Hispanic youth spend more time unsupervised than other children. Now, the No Child Left Behind Act was enforced to ensure a lot of positive outcomes. Some being that all students would be educated in learning environments that are safe and conducive to learning, that all students would graduate high school, and that the state and districts would strengthen before and after school programs. However, because of unfulfilled funding promises in Illinois, the number of after school programs was cut in half, leaving 101,343 children without a safe place to go after school. (new paragraph) Currently, Chicago, IL is desperately losing the battles of the war against teenage deaths. Within a short six month span, from September 2007 to March 2008, 20 Chicago Public School students had been killed, 18 by gunfire. In the “06-07” school year, 24 of the more than 30 students killed were shot to death, compared with between 10 and 15 fatal shootings in the years before. (new paragraph) We at Tiny's Performing Arts Center (TPAC), are utterly disgusted by these statistics and we hope the following programs we’ve created can give the youth less time on the streets and more time to live!
